I remember the 1st few games of the season when the Cowboys led the league in rushing. I don’t see why that should be the case for the entire season. I know Jason Garrett (and Jerry Jones for that matter) want a vertical passing type of gameplan that scores lots of points and is much more exciting to watch. But when you take into account the type of O line we have (big mauler type), the trio of back we have and the big physical blocking TEs and WRs we have, 200yds a game should be our rushing goal.
Yes, of course, there needs to be some passing mixed in to keep defenses honest but a 60-40 run mix would bring about more success overall.
Therefore, 3rd down runs become that much more important.
I like 60/40 as well. I would like to see more 1st down passing and more 2nd/3rd down running, i.e. run when they expect pass, and vice versa. I know Garrett thinks no one should be able to stop them if they execute perfectly (which is true), but no team can be expected to execute perfectly every time. Play-calling is huge.
