Potential Draft Picks: Jared Odrick, DT/DE, Penn State

[caption id="attachment_512" align="alignright" width="311" caption="Penn State DT Jared Odrick would transition to DE in the Cowboys' 3-4 scheme."][/caption] As we have made clear, the Cowboys have some important decisions looming regarding the defensive end position. Three players at the position, Marcus Spears, Stephen Bowen, and Jason Hatcher, are all restricted free agents this season. It is possible that Dallas works out a long-term deal with one, or perhaps even two of them, but the position figures to lose depth by 2011. It is also possible that another team will give up a draft pick for one of them this season, leaving the team with an immediate hole in the rotation. Igor Olshansky had a respectable year, but he is more of a run-stuffing end than anything. The Cowboys could surely benefit from a player with both run and pass-defending capabilities. We profiled practice squad player Marcus Dixon, who has a great shot of making the 53-man roster this season. Regardless, the Cowboys will need more playmakers at the position in the near future. Penn State DT/DE Jared Odrick was our first-round selection for the Cowboys in our first Mock Draft. He was a defensive tackle in college who is perfectly suited to move to DE in a 3-4. Scouting Report Odrick is an excellent penetrator with tremendous athleticism, particularly for his size. For a 3-4 defensive end, though, he is a bit small, but definitely has a body frame which would be capable of adding bulk. His quickness allows him to gain a step on linemen so that he can use his average strength to his advantage. He has a great motor and never gives up on a play, but sometimes loses leverage by playing a bit high. There are some character concerns, as he was arrested last year. If this is determined to be a non-factor, however, it should give Odrick good value, since he is perhaps a top-15 talent who will drop passed that tier. Projection Odrick figures to go somewhere in the 20's, perhaps dropping into the early second-round if teams deem his character a liability. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDNdZ9WrtTk]

I like Dan Williams for DL in the 1st. NT is a need also. But I like Mike Neal better for DE in the 3rd. This should be a good draft for DEs late. Also, as you guys mentioned people like Ross should be available later for NT. BTW I don’t like Cody. We need guys that can do it all. Now if he falls way down, maybe.

  2. I personally don’t like Williams in the first. Backup DT is definitely a big need, but a DT really wouldn’t get much playing time barring a Ratliff injury.

I think Odrick could get into the mix immediately in 2010, and then become a possible starter by next season.
